　早在萊特兄弟發明飛機的120年前，法國造紙商孟格菲兄弟把紙屑扔進火爐時，發現紙屑隨著熱氣不斷往上飄；這可給了他們一個靈感：「有沒有可能讓更大的物體升起來呢？」

　為了解答，兄弟倆做了無數個「浮空器」，隔年，他們讓一個巨大的浮空器升到1000多米高，足足飛了兩公里才降落。孟格菲兄弟頓時聲名大噪，受邀至巴黎的凡爾賽宮進行公開表演。

　　在國王路易十六與民眾面前，孟格菲兄弟首次進行了載有乘客的升空實驗，乘員是一隻羊、一隻鴨子、和一隻公雞。熱氣球載著三隻動物巍巍上升，在空中飛了8分鐘、3.5公里遠。熱氣球在大家的掌聲和歡呼中降落，動物們也安然無恙，證實升至高空不會導致生物死亡。

   三隻動物宛如英雄凱旋歸來，受到眾人的表揚，路易十六甚至將那頭羊送進自己的皇家動物園，以示獎賞。
