Great Auk

Great Auk, sometimes called North Pole penguin as it shares almost the same appearance and flying disability.

Great Auks used to live in islands around Atlantic coasts. Unable to fly, walking slowly and unafraid of humans, large quantities of Great Auks were hunted by humans for meat, egg and feather. They got extincted at the 19th century, making their body and egg specimen very valuable collections. Although they were said to be found in Newfoundland in 1852, still it was left unconfirmed.

Currently there are lots of furs, leathers and eggs of Great Auks stored in museums across the world. Besides, there are more than hundreds of pieces of Great Auk skeletons. However, the complete skeletons come to no more than 24 pieces.
