Description

Southern Pig-Footed Bandicoot

Before extinct, the southern pig-footed bandicoot used to live in the Australian outback. They are smaller than rabbits, with slender limbs and a pointed nose, and their forelimbs resemble hoof-like feet. They were not common in the first place, with a few indigenous people describing them as "plodding along on their hind legs and burrowing in warm, dry places."

Many carnivores are natural enemies of southern pig-footed bandicoot, but the greatest threat is from humans. In the 19th century, the European colonists' reclamation activities destroyed the habitat of the pig-footed bandicoot, coupled with the introduction of exotic animals such as cats, dogs, and foxes, which hugely reduced the population of the southern pig-footed bandicoot. It has been believed to be extinct since the mid-20th century, having reportedly vanished from its final refuge in southern Australia by 1945.

IUCN level: Extinct (EX)
