　　恩斯特．海克爾（Ernst Haeckel）是十九世紀的德國藝術家、生物學家、醫生。海克爾非常擅長繪畫浮游生物與水母，而海克爾的作品與眾不同之處在於，他並不滿足於僅畫出生物的正面照，他還細膩地從側面、背面、底部把生物的毛孔和皺摺處給畫了出來。

　　海克爾也認為「對稱」一詞無論在生物學跟藝術上都有絕對關聯。我們可以從上面幾張海克爾為出版書所繪製的插圖，看出他對於對稱的堅持。由此可發現，海克爾是個有點強迫症的人，但也是因為這份強迫症，才使得他的畫作具有獨特的藝術價值。

　　身為超級達爾文迷，海克爾相當奉行達爾文的經典理論「物競天擇，適者生存」，卻過分解讀了達爾文的原意，把自己變成激進的種族歧視者。他認為日耳曼民族才是最優秀的人種，而猶太人和蒙古人則是劣等人種。二十世紀時，海克爾的理論影響了希特勒，間接造成屠殺猶太人的悲慘歷史。
